THE PRAYAASH WEEK

By: Anshuman Ray

“Not all of us can do great things , but we all can do small things with great love” – Mother Teresa.

A bunch of inspired youth came forward two years back to bring a change in our society but most particularly to bring a change in the mindset. About how we live our worlds being totally oblivious
about the various problems and challenges in our society. Thus started Prayaash.

The Prayaash Week is one of the major initiatives of Prayaash, where we reached out to various places, various people and tried to enrich their lives, even if for a short while. Students from various colleges such as CIPET, CET, Ravenshaw University, BJB College, CEB and TRIDENT Academy took part in the crusade and got to know how bleak life can be, how people are ignorant about basic human rights and how real happiness comes from very small things. The week commenced on 8th of March on the occasion of  International Women's Day.

8th of March – Awareness campaign on Women’s rights.
Venue-  1. Forum-mart, Kharavel Nagar, Bhubaneswar. (10:30 AM-12:00 PM)
         2. Big Bazaar, KIIT square, Bhubaneswar.(04:00 pM-06:00 PM)
Prayaash marked this International Women's Day with an awareness campaign. One out of four women in India suffers from domestic violence , women are mistreated , sometimes abused , sometimes raped. It's time to interfere now ,at least by educating them about their rights. Two hotspots in the city were selected. All the associate members gathered at expected time and a team of 4 was created. Each team was given a chart which had some scribbled lines on it and pamphlets to distribute among the masses. Teams were told to get signatures of the various people visiting the mall along with some kind of message they'd like to give to society. This activity went on for about an hour and half.Thereafter the members  congregated at a place and the signed charts were collected. On aligning the charts, the scribbles on each chart condensed to form a woman's face. Each one of us contributed a color to the woman's face which signifies the different shades of a woman's life.

9th of March – Association Visits.
Venue-  1. Ananda Bhavan (Old-age-home), Oldtown, Bhubaneswar(11:00 AM-02:00 PM)
 2. Odisha Association for Blind, Kharavel Nagar, Bhubaneswar(02:00 PM-04:00 PM)
 3. Sriharsha Mishra Memorial School for Deaf, Patia, Bhubaneswar(04:00 PM-06:00 PM)

These associations have been always been very supportive of our endeavors and spending some time with them has always been an enriching experience. Their smiles , their stories , their life has taught so much more than anyone could imagine. We tried to make their day a little brighter. Those blind children perceive this world way better than us. At the old age we came to know the untold stories and leaned from their experiences. The deaf and dumb school were the cheery lot and we had loads of fun with them.

10th of March – Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
Venue-Sikharchandi temple(06:30 AM- 08:30 AM)

An initiative by the Indian government and doing anything in their line of action was certainly a privilege. It has been a huge step towards a responsible nation but to call it a change is too early. But Prayaash contributed to the cause with gusto. Members were provided with broom sticks ; gloves and garbage disposal bags. The whole premise of the shikharchandi members was cleaned of leaves and
other garbage  by sweeping and the plastic and non- biodegradable materials were burnt down

11th of March– Rural Visit
Venue- Kujimahal, Chandaka, Khurda(09:00 AM-02:00 PM)

Vast untapped potential lies within the remote corners of the country. The members of Prayaash visited one of them during our week in order to educate them about their health and hygiene, study their lifestyle. A survey of 200 families was done that day which includes basic information about the families such as number of members, sanitation, nutrition etc.

12th of March – Health Camp
Venue- Kujimahal, Chandaka, Khurda(09:00 AM-12:00 PM).

On the fifth day of the Prayaash week, Prayaash in association with Help age India set up a health camp in Kujimahal, a village near Chandaka. The session was divided into two sessions with kujimahal being a big village. The first session was conducted at the left part of the village at the local temple. Three doctors volunteered to vouch and cater to this noble cause.

13th of March – Blood donation camp
Venue- Aryapalli Community hall, KIIT square, Patia(9:00 AM-12:00 PM).

With more 50+ donations in the past one year, we don’t know how many lives we may have saved. An unit of blood may help in saving 4 lives together. The volunteers of Prayaash were most excited to donate blood on this occasion. First-timers had an unbelievable experience for sure. This event will be facilitated by AmaOdisha.

14th of March: Self defense programme.
Venue- Kanakmanjari Nursing College, Rasulgarh, Bhubaneswar(11:00 AM – 04:00 PM).

Even when our country is making strides in economic and scientific spheres, crimes against women has been on the rise. Prayaash wishes to impart self defense training by professionals, to girls in educational institutes. The training was imparted by Ayush Goyal, a 3rd year student of our college and the girls learned the basics of self defense.

It was a very fulfilling experience for the volunteers. In seven days they came to know the various facets of life through the people they met, through the stories shared, through the great moments they all had. They touched lives, and learn a fact or two about theirs too.
